Unless you have worked at 2334 S. Broadway in Santa Ana, you may not have seen this car since 1977, or at all.
The 1977 All American Racers Eagle 'Sidehack' might be one of the most misunderstood cars to ever go to Indianapolis. It was a team effort by Dan Gurney's formidable squad that could have truly got in the way of Foyt's fourth had things been different. Moreover, it would have had USAC not regulated the turbo boost so tightly on the legendary Drake-Offenhauser powerplants. The online know-it-alls blame the chassis, but it seems they know as much about the car as I do about the ecological makeup of Croatia. The car is brilliant. And you can see it for yourself at Road America next weekend, along with 28 other fabulous All American Racers Eagles racing machines. |
