Dad and his long-time friend Chuck Rose (pictured) entered Dad's 1976 Yamaha 340 SRX in the Race class at the @wideopenwi vintage snowmobile show. While an overall win wasn't in the cards, the SRX captured 3rd place and drew the eye of many Yamaha riders. Our 'other' 340 SRX is slowly being built up into an all-out modified machine and should be a stunner when it's complete.
For the first time since December, 1968, our 1968 All American Racers Eagle Mk IV has the correct injection atop it. We still have a dummy block in place for proper fitment of the soon-to-be SBC, but this crossram setup matches the photos that Terry Malone took in November 1968 when the car was at All American Racers.
Special thanks to Bill Wiswedel for the wonderful addition to the Eagle. Reid was the first Formula Ford person I met when we showed up at a Blackhawk Farms national in 2010. He was in awe of the Eagle, and that someone in a vintage car was keeping up with Honda-powered DB1s. I did for a time before I burned off the R25 Hoosiers that weekend trying to keep up.
We've been friends ever since, and he is seriously one of the good eggs in the FF world. He's also ridiculously fast and easy on equipment with his 1992 Van Diemen and thus got the nod to drive the Eagle at the WIC earlier this summer. In all this time, a photo has never emerged of us together on the track, but Bill Nesius did his magic and captured us entering Canada Corner Saturday morning during the final qualifying session. We both managed to win our classes this weekend, with Reid running away from the FF races as per usual. More goodness next year. This morning's race was red flagged with one lap to go, but the Elden again paced the Vintage Formula Ford class to the win, despite the fact the tires were a "bit" used up. A "bit" akin to saying that the Titanic was a small yacht. Driver error there.
Special thanks to Paul Jay for keeping the car in top form, Werth Race Engineering, Wayne Brown, Scott Young Enterprises, Shippert Racing Services and American Cylinder Gas. Cheers Mike, your Elden was a scream to drive this year. Today we finished P1 in the Group 4 race in Vintage Formula Ford, P7 overall for Fords. This was our first win in-class for the Elden, and we couldn't be more pleased.
The results of the 10-lap FF East vs. West Cup feature this afternoon. Thirty-four cars started, and the Elden came home fifth, and first in Vintage Formula Ford. It was solid throughout, and the Elden gave me my first sub 2:33 lap at RA.
More goodness ahead. #121 is currently P1 in Vintage Formula Ford, while birthday boy @reidhazelton is P1 in the #1 (as seen behind the Elden) for Post Club Ford and for the overall Ford field.
This afternoon at 4 pm, the East vs. West FF Challenge race rolls off, with the Elden starting 8th and the Van Diemen 1st. |
