We had a great day running with Vintage Indy today at our usual asphalt playground, Road America.
Reid Hazelton is piloting our 1972 All American Racers Eagle #7228 this weekend, and we found some changes we have made since the Miller Meet last year have proved to increase performance in the car in a road course setting. We roll off caboose on the schedule tomorrow, but we'll be at the track throughout the day. Oh, and we have KMPR themed coloring books on-hand, courtesy of Bill Nesius Photography, and pre-packaged crayons as well. Free for all! Yesterday was the day our 1981 All American Racers Eagle #8101 returned to the track for a shake down, after nearly 18 years of accumulating parts and the aligning ourselves with right people to make it right again.
Reid Hazelton piloted the Eagle at the Autobahn Country Club for us, as he will in July at the Weathertech International Challenge along side his duties racing our 1977 AAR Eagle DGF #005 this season. The session proved that the car had some teething issues, but nothing we won't have sorted soon enough. Special thanks to Don Hoevel Racing for their at-track and restoration support, RB Motorsports Engineering, Comprep, and finally, Bill Nesius Photography for the stunning gallery here. Every year our squad supplies momentos for Vintage Indy's stop at Road America in the shape of relabeled champagne bottles. Every year I pick some historic moment from RA's IndyCar past to commemorate.
There was only one thing that came to mind this year. Zanardi lighting it up in T5. 30 years ago today - race #1.
If you would have told me then everything we've done as a team since, I wouldn't have believed you. If you would have told me all the people that have helped us along the way, I wouldn't have believed you. But that is the difference between being 11 and 41- 30 years of understanding that it takes a lot to make anything in life work, and that people make it all happen. I've been lucky to have some amazing people back the #00, #820 #80, #46 and #21 through the years. People like Guy and Gary Schneider, Greg Nelson, Team CeeGee, Shiddy Reeds, Silkolene Lubricants, G-Force, Mazda Motorsports, All American Racers, Werth Racing, RB Motorsports Engineering, Scott Young Enterprises, Elden Race Cars, Paul Jay, Reid Hazelton, Jake Jacobs... just to name a few. Thank you, endlessly. You won't find AI on this page!
Instead: What we believe to be AAR Eagle #407 is nearly riveted together for the first time since December, 1968. |
