This morning at the Miller Meet, we were visited by 1972 All American Racers Eagle #7228's original mechanic, Mike Devin. Mike was the man leading the efforts when the car was raced by the Commander Motor Homes squad in late 1973 and 1974.
We felt it would be appropriate for Mike to sign the chassis since he was the one who, among many other things, helped lead the team when #7228 was quickly called into service in September, 1973 after #7224 was wrecked at OMS. It's always a pleasure to talk to the legends of the sport, and Mike Devin is certainly that. Fear not! We'll have it on static display at this weekend's Miller Meet at IRP. This will be the first Miller Meet function where rear-engined Offy-powered Indycars will be allowed, and it should prove to be a real treat. Next year, you can expect at least one Offy-powered Eagle from KMPR to be thundering around the Milwaukee Mile at the 2025 edition of the Miller Meet. Finally, we are starting to work out some of the bugs in Eagle #7228. Had a good session going until we got the meatball flag for smoking.
Offenhauser engines will do that. But the Eagle is a dream. Back on IMS Opening Day in 2011, we were running 'Miss Sunoco' aka 1972 All American Racers Eagle #7225, and I wandered down pitlane to check out some of the older iron when I spotted Parnelli Jones hanging out with a Novi.
I took one photo from further back, and then came a bit closer. He turned and looked my way as if to dare me. I clicked and quickly smiled, and so did he. |
