51 years ago, Michael Argetsinger raced the Elden in the American Express Formel Ford Cup all over Europe. As we found out recently, his brother Peter also "borrowed" the car for a hillclimb event that summer and put the car in the trees. If that wasn't enough, their brother Rob took it for a spin and also had an off with it!
We did make one edit to the livery going forward. Dark blue cars don't show up well in rear-view mirrors, so some Dayglow orange vinyl has been added for visibility. Although it doesn't seem to photograph well... Anyways, the Elden is entered for the SVRA SuperTour at Road America in mid-May, and we think all the improvements Paul Jay has worked into the chassis should prove to be magic. Along with PJ's tinkering, notable upgrades include a fresh Kent Ford courtesy of the fine folks at RB MotorSports Engineering, a Quartermaster clutch a-la the Eaglet, and a blueprinted Mk8 Hewland courtesy of the delightfully mad scientists at Scott Young Enterprises. All in memory of Mike, and now Peter. And once again, short wheelbase is not a crime... Received a message from a friend of Michael and Peter Argetsinger this morning.
In August, 1973, Peter Argetsinger drove the Elden in a the Kaiserslautern Hill Climb and put it in the trees, damaging the front of the car. Thus, this is why the car had a fresh body for Hockenheim shortly there-after. So, another Argetsinger name will be added to the rear cowling of the Elden. More details, and with luck, some photos to follow... Some days, the Elden wants to go outside and sit in the sun in hopes of growing longer like other Formula Fords.
Today was not a good day for that. Fitting Driver X into the Eagle tomorrow. It's weird to have someone else fitted to the car you've throttled for the past 15 years, but it's the flying of the Eagle I promised Dan Gurney, not who is flying it.
Everyone wants to see the Eagle, and as of late- the Elden too. This is what we chose to do. Put the jolly, overly-wordy driver in the Elden, a car for which there are zero expectations, as it is an overlooked gem, and Driver X in the Eagle - a sorted, beautiful bullet ready to yet again fulfill the objectives Santa Ana set for it. But don't let my words fool you. We have four working gears in the Elden now, a lovely engine, and a year of me throwing it around to see what it would take. It's going to be a fun summer. |
